The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has reaffirmed its commitment to driving national progress through research and innovation, aligning closely with the country’s Smart Zimbabwe 2030 Vision.
Speaking during the POTRAZ ICT Research Symposium, held under the theme “Advancing Digital Transformation through Progressive ICT Research,” Director General Dr. Gift Machengete highlighted the central role of innovation in shaping Zimbabwe’s digital future.Dr. Machengete said the symposium was not merely an academic gathering but a celebration of transformative ideas a space where vision is turned into actionable progress. “Research is the engine of innovation,” said Dr. Machengete.
“It allows us to challenge assumptions, foster critical thinking, and deliver evidence-based solutions. At POTRAZ, we are dedicated to building a resilient and inclusive digital environment by supporting research, promoting digital literacy, and advancing technologies that empower communities and drive economic growth.”
He underscored the growing importance of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Cloud Computing, and the Internet of Things (IoT), noting their transformative potential across key sectors including education, health, agriculture, and governance.According to Dr. Machengete, these technologies are not only enablers of efficiency but are also catalysts for sustainable development — essential in creating a connected, knowledge-driven, and innovation-led economy.
The POTRAZ chief further emphasized the regulator’s focus on crafting balanced regulatory frameworks that both encourage innovation and safeguard consumer rights, digital sovereignty, and national interests. He cited the “triple helix” model — a collaborative approach involving government, academia, and industry — as key to unlocking Zimbabwe’s innovation potential.
“ICT research is no longer a luxury but a national imperative,” he said. “It is the foundation for evidence-based policymaking and sustainable socio-economic development.”
Through initiatives such as the POTRAZ ICT Research Journal, partnerships with local universities, and the Innovation Fund, POTRAZ continues to empower researchers and innovators to develop homegrown digital solutions with real-world impact across Zimbabwean communities.
As Zimbabwe moves toward its Smart 2030 Vision, POTRAZ’s dedication to fostering an innovation-driven ecosystem remains pivotal in transforming research insights into technological advancements that support inclusive growth and digital transformation nationwide.-
