Cassava supercomputer ranked 36th on TOP500 list of world’s most powerful computing systems Africa has secured its place arou

Africa has secured its place around the global AI supercomputing table after Cassava Compute’s Cape Town-based supercomputer was ranked 36th on the TOP500 list of the world’s most powerful computing systems.

The NVIDIA-powered system made it well within the top 50 on the TOP500 list, a global benchmark for high-performance computing, marking a major milestone for Africa’s digital transformation journey.

The supercomputer – named ‘Mufungi’ by Cassava Compute co-founder Strive Masiyiwa is now fully operational and serving both African and international customers. Mufungi is a Shona word translated “onewhothinks”.

The investment comes as governments, industry, business and researchers increasingly

seek access to the computing power needed to develop and deploy artificial intelligence systems and solutions.

High-performance computing is critical for training AI models, processing vast datasets and developing applications across sectors including healthcare, financial services, agriculture, education and scientific research.

By bringing advanced computing capacity closer to African users, Cassava is set to lower barriers to AI development and reduce reliance on computing infrastructure located outside the continent.
