In a significant move aimed at strengthening digital and financial inclusion, NetOne has partnered with the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to donate 815 SIM cards and debit cards to traditional leaders across Zimbabwe.
The initiative marks a major step toward empowering rural communities, where nearly three-quarters of the country’s population resides. The handover ceremony took place at Makombe Building and brought together senior government officials and NetOne executives, underscoring a shared commitment to improving service delivery and communication structures at the grassroots level.
Chiefs and headmen play a critical leadership role in their communities, and equipping them with reliable connectivity and financial tools is expected to enhance coordination, access to information, and efficient management of development programmes.
Representing NetOne on behalf of Group CEO Eng. Raphael Mushanawani, NetOne Financial Services General Manager Mr. Joseph Machiva described the initiative as more than just a donation. He emphasized that the programme is a strategic enabler for smoother disbursement of government funds, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach areas. By integrating SIM connectivity with debit card access, traditional leaders will be better positioned to receive and manage financial resources transparently and efficiently.
The initiative also addresses communication challenges in disaster-prone regions. With improved network access, local leaders can now respond more quickly during emergencies, relay critical information, and coordinate relief efforts more effectively.
This digital empowerment aligns with national efforts to bridge the urban-rural technology gap and promote inclusive participation in the digital economy. The event programme featured opening remarks, a detailed NetOne presentation, the official handover ceremony, and acknowledgement of the donation by the Acting Permanent Secretary.
Discussions were also held around a Memorandum of Understanding that will guide ongoing collaboration between NetOne and the Ministry.Grounded in the values of Ubuntu, the partnership reflects NetOne’s broader vision of building connected, resilient communities.
Through initiatives like this, the telecoms giant continues to position itself as a key driver of national development and digital transformation in Zimbabwe.
