SpaceX Warns: Update Your Dormant Starlink Dish Before November 17 or Lose It Forever

If you have a dormant Starlink dish, you’ll need to update its software soon or risk it becoming bricked, according to SpaceX.

The company is sending out emails to customers about plugging in their Starlink dish and putting it outside to receive an update. “You must perform this software update before Nov. 17, or your Starlink will no longer function,” the email warns.

SpaceX has issued an urgent notice to Starlink users, warning that any inactive or stored Starlink dishes must be updated before November 17 to avoid becoming permanently unusable. The company has begun emailing affected customers, urging them to plug in their Starlink hardware and place it outside so it can receive a crucial software update.

“It is critical you perform this software update before Nov. 17, or your Starlink will no longer function,” the company’s email cautioned. The warning mainly targets users who have **paused or canceled their Starlink subscriptions** and stored their equipment without keeping it online. Since Starlink dishes require an internet connection to receive firmware updates, prolonged inactivity could cause the system to fall behind on essential updates — leading to what SpaceX calls a “bricked” or non-functional device.According to a recent update on the Starlink support page, this mandatory software patch is part of SpaceX’s ongoing improvements to boost network security, performance, and reliability. The company also clarified that even former customers can install the update without reactivating their service plan.

“You do not need an active subscription to complete this update,” SpaceX explained. “Simply plug in your Starlink, follow the on-screen instructions, and the update will install automatically. You will not be charged for completing this process.”

In addition, SpaceX noted that another group of users could face temporary connectivity loss. Starting November 18, any Starlink kits that haven’t been updated will lose internet access until the software is installed. The notice underscores SpaceX’s efforts to maintain the integrity of the Starlink network as it continues to expand globally — but also serves as a critical reminder for users: keep your dish updated or risk losing it permanently.
