Econet Wireless Zimbabwe Announces Departure of COO Kezito Makuni
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe has announced the departure of its Chief Operating Officer, Kezito Makuni, effective February 28, 2025.
In an official statement, the listed telecommunications and technology company confirmed that Makuni, an experienced telecoms engineer and business executive, is leaving to pursue new opportunities outside the organization.
Makuni, who has been with Econet for 16 years, was pivotal in the company’s expansion and digital transformation efforts. The company expressed its appreciation for his contributions, stating:
“The Board and Management of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe extend their sincere gratitude to Mr. Makuni for his dedication and impact on the company’s success. We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.”
While additional details regarding his departure have not been disclosed, internal sources indicate that the transition was amicable, with the board and executive team aware of his decision for several months.
Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, founded by billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Strive Masiyiwa, remains one of the country’s largest and most influential corporations. The company, which is publicly traded on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, is led by long-serving Group CEO Douglas Mboweni, supported by Deputy CEO Roy Chimanikire.
Last year, Econet successfully executed a major restructuring initiative, acquiring fintech businesses previously under EcoCash Holdings Zimbabwe Limited. This strategic move, which included the EcoCash mobile money business, has further strengthened Econet’s market position.
Makuni’s departure marks a leadership transition for the company as it continues to drive innovation and growth in Zimbabwe’s telecommunications and financial technology sectors.
