Air Zimbabwe has soared back into action, resuming flights on the crucial Harare-Johannesburg route! This exciting development is a welcome boost for economic activity in Zimbabwe, reconnecting the bustling cities and offering more travel options for passengers.
The national airline will operate flights between Harare’s Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) and Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) on a regular schedule: Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Air Zimbabwe expressed their delight in a statement: “We are thrilled to announce the successful resumption of our flights from Harare to Johannesburg. We are delighted to reconnect these bustling cities and enhance travel options for our passengers. A big thank you to our loyal passengers for the continued support. Here’s to many smooth and enjoyable journeys ahead. Book your next flight to or from Johannesburg!”
This news comes alongside promising plans to resume direct flights from Zimbabwe to the United Kingdom. This move aims to bolster trade and leverage Zimbabwe’s central position within the SADC region. Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona confirmed these plans last week.
Currently, thousands of Zimbabweans travel to Europe via connecting flights in South Africa, Kenya, Dubai, or Ethiopia. Reintroducing direct flights to the UK would significantly reduce travel costs not just for Zimbabweans, but also for travelers from neighboring countries due to Zimbabwe’s central location.
Since the advent of the Second Republic, Zimbabwe has witnessed a remarkable surge in air traffic. More than 20 airlines now operate flights into the country, a testament to President Mnangagwa’s successful engagement and re-engagement drive. This enhanced global connectivity fosters new opportunities for business, tourism, cultural exchange, and access to new markets. Uganda Airlines recently joined the growing list of airlines serving Harare, further solidifying Zimbabwe’s position as a desirable destination for investment and tourism.
Air Zimbabwe’s return to the skies signifies a brighter future for economic activity and travel options in Zimbabwe. The potential resumption of direct flights to the UK adds another layer of excitement, promising a more connected and globally integrated nation.
