A new report by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has found that Zimbabweans value data privacy, but many are unaware of the risks and protections available to them.
The report, titled “DATA PRIVACY: OPINIONS & EXPERIENCES OF ZIMBABWEANS,” is based on a survey of 1183 Zimbabweans aged 18 years and above. The survey found that 99% of respondents believe that the protection of personal information is important, and 93% support the custodial sentencing of those found in violation of data privacy laws.
However, the survey also found that many Zimbabweans are unaware of the risks and protections available to them. For example, 25% of respondents were unaware of the risks posed by “free” online services to personal data privacy and security, and 82% said they did not understand the laws around the use of personal information.
The survey also found that many Zimbabweans have experienced data privacy violations. For example, 22% of respondents said they had experienced the misuse of their personal data at least once.
The POTRAZ report highlights the need for more education and awareness about data privacy in Zimbabwe. The report also recommends that the government strengthen enforcement of data privacy laws and regulations.
