The Indian government has warned its citizens of an advanced malware targeting Android users, capable of accessing sensitive data and allowing hackers control over infected devices.
The malware, called DogeRAT, is distributed via social media and messaging platforms as legitimate apps such as ChatGPT, Opera Mini and even as “premium versions” of YouTube, Netflix and Instagram.
Once installed on a victim’s device, DogeRAT can steal sensitive data such as contacts, messages and banking credentials. It can also take control of the device, allowing hackers to send spam, initiate unauthorized payments, alter files and even track the user’s location.
The Indian government has advised its citizens to be wary of downloading apps from unverified third-party platforms and clicking on links from unknown senders. They are also advised to keep their smartphones updated with the latest software and security patches and to install an antivirus app.
The advisory comes as India’s cybersecurity landscape has become increasingly vulnerable. In 2022, the Indian IT ministry reported a 171% increase in cybersecurity incidents affecting government departments.
One of the most significant cybersecurity incidents in India last year was a ransomware attack on the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi. The attack impacted five servers containing a total of 1.3 terabytes of data.
The Indian government is taking steps to improve its cybersecurity posture. In June, the government launched a new cybersecurity policy that aims to make India a “cyber-safe” nation. The policy includes measures to strengthen the country’s cyber defenses, improve incident response capabilities and raise awareness of cybersecurity among citizens.
