Twitter has started using a new voice messaging feature for direct messages (DMs) on the social media platform. Users can now send voice DMs that are 140 seconds long at maximum. The test feature has been made available for both Android and iOS users. Currently, the new feature is being rolled out in select few countries including India, Brazil and Japan.
Similar to voice tweets, the voice DMs have been designed as an in-line recording feature. However, it is not clear whether the voice DM feature has a set limit like voice tweets. It’s worth noting that the feature is being rolled out in a phased manner, which means not everyone will get the new voice DM feature at one time. You can check the feature by going to your DM and try to send a voice message. If you notice the mic icon, then you can hold it to record and release it to send. This is mostly how it works on the iOS platform.
The voice message feature being rolled out to Twitter is a nice attempt to offer something that we already have on instant messaging apps like WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, and more. The new voice DM feature may give Twitter users more convenience in one-to-one conversations.
In June, Twitter started rolling out audio tweets on iOS. The users who received the new feature saw a waveform icon placed alongside the camera icon.
Tweeting with voice was not too different from tweeting with the text. To start, open the tweet composer and tap the new icon with wavelengths. You’ll see your profile photo with the record button at the bottom tap this to record your voice. Each voice tweet captured up to 140 seconds of audio.
Voice message is a feature that has been available on other social media platforms for a while now. The new chat option can be Twitter’s attempt to encourage users to use the direct messages option more.
