Africa is probably the continent with the biggest prospects for internet business and development at the moment. The continent has always been viewed as a continent that isn’t very connected in terms of internet speeds and the number of users compared to other parts of the world.
Most African countries have internet speeds 1000kbps to 2000kbps which makes of Africa, unfortunately, the slowest continent when it comes to internet average link speed. To understand that number, most European countries have averages above 5000mps, while in South America and Most of Asia, speeds are usually above 2000kbps. Some exceptions do occur, and countries like Afghanistan and Yemen, in Asia, have speeds below 1000mbps, which are worse than most African nations.
New data, mined by Cable.co.uk from broadband speed tests worldwide reveals the countries in the world that have the fastest broadband internet connections.
Cable.co.uk analyzed data which was collected over a 12 month period up to 10 May 2017, from 189 countries.
The five fastest countries have download speeds around 40 times faster than the five slowest. Singapore tops the table at 55.13Mbps, compared to Yemen, which is more than 162 times slower at just 0.34Mbps.
Some people would prefer to download movies and TV series. Downloading videos needs fast internet speeds and increased connectivity. The test measured overall speeds as well as the time it would take to download a 7.5 GB movie. Additionally, it mainly focused on fixed broadband connections, which placed Africa at a disadvantage regarding infrastructure challenges.

- Tunisia is ranked 88 globally and takes 4 hours 52 minutes to download a high definition video. The internet speed in Tunisia is 3.5 Mbps.
- Madagascar It would take 4 hours 53 minutes to download a high definition movie in Madagascar, the island clocked fourth in Africa and 89 globally. Madagascar has a download speed of 3.49 Mbps.
- Nigeria has one of the highest internet users in Africa. Nigeria is ranked 95 globally. It would take a user in Nigeria 5 hours 25 minutes to download a 7.5 GB high definition movie. Nigeria has a download speed of 3.15 Mbps.
- Zimbabwe has a download speed of 2.49 Mbps and it would take 6 hours 50 minutes to download a high definition video. Zimbabwe takes on the number seven spot.
- Zambia has a download speed of 2.45 Mbps, much like Zimbabwe, it would take 6 hours 58 minutes to high definition movie. Zambia is ranked 106 globally.
- Ghana has a download speed of 2.3 Mbps, it would take users 8 hours 4 minutes to download a high definition movie. Ghana has the second least fast internet speed in Africa. It is ranked at 116 globally.
- Uganda has a download speed of 2.12 Mbps, this East African country has the slowest internet speed. It would take 8 hours 4 minutes to download a high definition movie in Uganda.
