This did not come as a surprise to most people, who have been following the suspension of mobile networks promotions by Potraz. NetOne is the latest to fall victim as we had seen both Econet and Telecel suspended their promotions.
The state owned mobile network operator, issued a press statement announcing the suspension of its Data Bundles Reloaded and Bundles Reappear Promotions.
Potraz has not issued any statement as to why they have instructed MNO to stop all promotions.
One NetOne customer who preferred to be Moyo said this is a way of slowing the down the usage of whatsapp, remember a revolution is in progress as we speak. According to Moyo, most people in Zimbabwe have become citizen journalists who take photos and videos of events as they happen and upload them to social media for the world to see.
Is this move by Potraz going make it harder for citizen journalism?
Mr Moyo also highlighted that the Government, via Potraz collects 4% of revenue from MNOs. These promotions were killing revenue streams. And the Government is looking for way to make more money even if it means affecting the masses.
Speaking to one MNO manager said that popular WhatsApp and Facebook bundles have not been affected by the current suspensions by the regulator.
